TOWNSEND — North Middlesex Regional High School senior Gabriella de Carvalho has earned the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy in English and Portuguese for her proficiency in both languages.
The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language by the time they graduate high school. Students who earn the Seal receive a special designation on their diploma recognizing their achievement.
Gabriella is a heritage speaker of Portuguese. She credits her family’s dedication to using the language in daily habits such as text conversations with helping her practice and maintain proficiency.
Gabriella will be awarded her Seal along with her diploma at North Middlesex Regional High School’s graduation on Friday, June 5.
More than 18,000 students have achieved the Seal of Biliteracy since 2019.
The Seal represents academic excellence, strengthens college applications, improves job prospects and prepares students for a global workforce that values multilingualism.
“Heartfelt congratulations to Gabriella,” said Principal Laurie Smith. “We are honored to educate students who make an effort to connect with rich cultural heritage, family and the greater global community.”
“Earning the Seal of Biliteracy is an impressive accomplishment that speaks to Gabriella’s dedication to her family’s heritage,” said Superintendent Brad Morgan. “Multilingualism is an important skill that creates opportunities for students in college and careers. We congratulate Gabriella on this well-deserved recognition.”
